Mein Tag begann früh: um 5 Uhr, eigentlich wie immer... nur diesmal musste ich um 6 Uhr los, 20 Minuten nach Philipsburg zur Great Bay Express Fähre (https://www.greatbayexpress.com). Ich parkierte ganz frech in der Nähe auf einem Parkplatz, bei dem ich nicht ganz sicher war, ob es überhaupt einer war - ich werde sehen, wenn ich heute Abend zurück bin…

Jetzt weiss ich auch weshalb man 45 Minuten vor Abfahrt dort sein muss: Passkontrolle… und das dauert seine Zeit hier in der Karibik! ; ) Fast pünktlich legte die Fähre um 7:30 Uhr ab und eine Stunde später erreichten wir Gustavia, St. Barts - eigentlich Saint Barthelemy.

My day started early: at 5 am, actually like always... only this time I had to leave at 6, 20 minutes to Philipsburg to the Great Bay Express ferry (https://www.greatbayexpress.com). I cheekily parked on a parking lot nearby, but I wasn't quite sure if it one - I'll see when I get back this evening...

Now I also know why you have to be there 45 minutes prior departure: passport control... and that takes time here in the Caribbean! ; ) The ferry left almost on time at 7:30 am and an hour later we reached Gustavia, St. Barts - actually Saint Barthelemy.

Dort hatte ich bei Turbe Rent a Car (https://www.turbe-car-rental.com) ein Auto gemietet, damit ich die 3x7 km kleine Insel auf eigene Faust erkunden kann... Ich wurde bei der Fähre abgeholt und zum kleinen Flughafen gefahren, um den Vertrag zu unterschreiben und meinen Kia abzuholen. Dann ging es endlich los, und das auf sehr steilen Strassen auf und ab über ganz St. Barts:

Es war erst 9 Uhr und ich suchte einen hübschen Ort um etwas zu frühstücken… aber erstens gab es gar keine grosse Auswahl, dann war fast alles zu oder ich zu früh?? Am Strand St. Jean fand ich dann endlich das Pearl (https://pearlbeachstbarth.com).

There I had rented a car from Turbe Rent a Car (https://www.turbe-car-rental.com) in order to explore the 3x7 km small island on my own... I was picked up at the ferry and driven to the small airport to sign the contract and pick up my Kia. Then I finally set off, on very steep roads up and down all over St. Barts:

It was only 9 am and I was looking for a nice place to have breakfast... but first of all there wasn't much choice, then almost everything was closed or was I too early?? On St. Jean beach I finally found the Pearl (https://pearlbeachstbarth.com).

Ich hatte vor die Insel mal zu umrunden und nach einem Platz Ausschau zu halten, wo ich mich etwas verweilen konnte... das war nicht so einfach, denn die Insel scheint in privaten Händen zu sein und so auch viele Zugänge! : ( Zudem waren überall Strassenarbeiten im Gange und einige Strassen gesperrt - also zurück anstatt rund herum... Ich checkte die Stände im Halbstundentakt ab bis ich um 14 Uhr bei brütender Hitze beim Wanderweg zum Plage Colombier stand...

I planned to go around the island and look for a place where I could stay for a while... that wasn't so easy, because the island seems to be in private hands and so are many accesses! : ( Everywhere there were roadworks going on and some roads were closed - so I had to drive back instead of around... I checked another beach every half hour until at 2 pm I was standing at the hiking trail to Plage Colombier… in the sweltering heat...

Ich sah den Wanderweg im Schatten des Gebüsches und wagte es! Nach 15 Minuten steil hinunter erreichte ich den wunderschönen und fast menschenleeren Colombier Strand und: Ich fand einen Schattenplatz - ja, das ist die Kunst hier bei 36 Grad!

I saw the hiking trail in the shade of the bushes and dared to do it! After 15 minutes of steep descent I reached the beautiful and almost deserted Colombier beach and: I found a shady spot - yes, that's the whole trick here with 36 centigrade! 

Flughafen / aiport St. Barts

Danach entschied ich zum Flughafen zurückzufahren, um meinen Mietwagen abzugeben und die restliche Zeit in der Hauptstadt Gustavia zu verbringen bevor die Fähre um 18:45 nach Philipsburg, Sint Maarten ablegen würde... Es war aber unglaublich heiss und ich müde, so dass ich mich in die nächste Bar d'Oubli (https://www.bardeloubli.com) setzte und ein frühes Abendessen zu mir nahm.

Es war ein schöner, sehr heisser Tag, aber einer war genug für mich hier auf St. Barts - kein Ort für mich um mehr Zeit zu verbringen. Und ja, mein Auto stand noch am selben Ort, wo ich es parkiert hatte! : )

After that I decided to drive back to the airport to return my rental car and spend the rest of my time in the capital Gustavia before the ferry to Philipsburg, Sint Maarten would leave at 6:45 pm. But it was incredibly hot and I was tired, so I sat down in the nearest Bar d'Oubli (https://www.bardeloubli.com) and had an early dinner.

It was a beautiful, very hot day, but one day was enough for me here on St. Barts - no place for me to spend more time. And yes, my car was still in the same place where I had parked it! : )
