Ich hatte 2 ganze Tage Zeit Canouan, was die die
Insel der Schildkröten heisst, zu entdecken... Auf der 13 km2
kleinen Insel wohnen zurzeit etwa 1000 Einwohner - die Hälfte wie vor dem
Hurrikan letzten Sommer. Ein grosses schützt die weissen Strände. Das konnte
ich sehen, als ich mich auf eine Wanderung Richtung Nordosten machte... nur kam
ich nicht weit, denn die beiden Hotels, die die Carnage und Mysore Bay teilen,
standen in Wiederaufbau und ein Shuttle fuhr mich von einem Ende zum andern an
die Carnage Bay.
Grenada und die Grenadinen wurden 2024 Anfang Juli vom Hurrikan Beryl (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantische_Hurrikansaison_2024#Hurrikan_Beryl) verwüstet… Spuren sind hier noch zu erkennen, aber vieles ist wieder offen oder fast fertig wiederaufgebaut. Canouan erhielt eine grosse Finanzspritze für den Wiederaufbau von Ian Wace, einem der Billionäre die auf der Insel wohnen. – So würde ich mein Geld auch investieren, denn mir geht es nur gut, wenn es meiner Umgebung gut geht… und so gibt es eine Zukunft nach der Katastrophe mit einer gemeinsamen Vision und Ziel, bravo! : )
I had 2 whole days to discover Canouan, which means the island of the turtles... The 13 km2 small island is currently home to around 1000 inhabitants - half as many as before the hurricane last summer. A big reef protects the white beaches. I could see that when I set off on a hike towards the northeast... but I didn't get very far, because the two hotels that divide Carnage and Mysore Bay were being rebuilt and a shuttle took me from one end to the other to Carnage Bay.
Grenada and the Grenadines were devastated by Hurricane Beryl (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Beryl) in early July 2024... Traces can still be seen here, but much is open again or almost completely rebuilt. Canouan received a large financial injection for reconstruction from Ian Wace, one of the billionaires who live on the island. – That's how I would invest my money too, because I only feel good when my surroundings do well... and that way there is a future after the disaster with a shared vision and goal, bravo! : )

Am Carnage Bay angelangt, hatte mein Telefon ein
Blackout im wortwörtlichen Sinn: Kaum hatte ich mit meiner maps.me Karte
geprahlt und dem Fahrer gesagt, dass ich alle Wege finde, schaltete mein
Telefon auf Schwarz! Ich schalte es ab und wieder an, aber es blieb schwarz.
Mir wurde auch schwarz – wie abhängig sind wir doch vom Telefon, da alle Daten
drauf gespeichert sind... Ich versuchte den Ausgang des Hotels zu finden, aber
das war nicht ganz so einfach ohne mein maps.me. Ich hatte Glück, ein Arbeiter
fuhr mich mit seinen Golfwagen zum Ausgang des Hotels. Dort stand ein Bus
bereit um die Arbeit nach Charlestown zu bringen - ich erwische eine der
seltenen Busse und als der Fahrer mein Problem verstand, fuhr er mich vor die
Tür von Digicel (https://www.digicelgroup.com/vc/en/store-locator)! : )
Ich hatte knapp 1 Stunde Zeit mein Problem zu lösen
bis der Laden schloss und schilderte Jaris, was geschehen war. Er kannte sich
mit iPhones nicht gross aus und wir fokussierten auf Plan B: ein neues Telefon.
Es hatte nur gerade eines, und als er es zu installieren begann, sagte ich ihm,
dass ich zu Hause mein altes iPhone hole um zu wissen, welche wichtigen Apps
ich benötige. Ich rannte nach Hause, holte unterwegs mein bestelltes Brot ab
und begann mit dem alten Telefon zurückzurennen. Kurze Zeit später stoppte ein
Auto und fragte mich, ob ich auf die Fähre muss? Ich antwortete ihm, dass ich
einen anderen Notfall habe, den ich ihn erklärte - und er fuhr mich direkt vor
den Eingang von Digicel.
Inzwischen hatte Jaris nachgedacht und seiner
Freundin telefoniert, die ein iPhone besitzt. Er war sicher, dass wenn wir das
Telefon entsperren können, er die Helligkeit wiederherstellen könnte... Es war
nicht einfach, weil wir nichts auf dem Display erkennen konnten, aber wir
schaffen es! : ) Diesmal hatte ich mehr Glück als auf den Kapverden 2023 (https://franziskaaeschbach28.blogspot.com), als das Meer mein Telefon nahm…
Nun konnte ich alles, was meinen Kopf die letzten 2 Stunden besetzte, wieder
loslassen! : ))
When I got to Carnage Bay, my phone had a literal blackout: I had barely boasted about my maps.me map and told the driver that I could find all the ways, when my phone went black! I turned it off and on again, but it stayed black. I also went black - how dependent we are on the phone, since all our data is stored on it... I tried to find the exit of the hotel, but that wasn't quite so easy without my maps.me. I was lucky, a worker drove me to the exit of the hotel in his golf cart. There was a bus waiting to take workers to Charlestown - I caught one of the rare buses and when the driver understood my problem, he drove me to the door of Digicel (https://www.digicelgroup.com/vc/en/store-locator)! : )
I had about an hour to solve my problem before the shop closed and I explained to Jaris what had happened. He didn't know much about iPhones and we focused on plan B: a new phone. He only had one and as he started to install it, I told him that I would get my old iPhone at home so that I would know which important apps I needed. I ran home, picked up the bread I had ordered on the way and started to run back with the old phone. A short while later a car stopped and asked me if I had to get on the ferry? I told him that I had another emergency, which I explained to him - and he drove me right to the entrance of Digicel.
Meanwhile Jaris had thought about it and called his girlfriend who has an iPhone. He was sure that if we could unlock the phone he would be able to restore the brightness... It wasn't easy because we couldn't see anything on the display, but we managed it! : ) This time I was luckier than in Cape Verde 2023 (https://franziskaaeschbach28.blogspot.com) when the sea took my phone... Now I could let go of everything that had occupied my head for the last 2 hours! : ))

Am Mittwoch nahm mich Power mit zu seinen Seemoos
Farmen (https://seamossbosscanouan.com). Er betreibt dieses Geschäft
seit fünf Jahren und verkauft das getrocknete Seemoos in alle Welt. Er erhält
grosse Unterstützung von seiner Tochter Shavron, die in Miami wohnt. Sein Sohn Roberto ist
seine Stütze für die Bay View Apartments (https://www.bvecanouan.com), was er von Taiwan aus regelt.
Wir fuhren 15 Minuten der Westküste Richtung Norden
als wir die ersten Plantagen erreichten. Nach einer halben Stunde kamen wir in Corbec
Bay an und ich ging eine Runde Schnorcheln, während Power einiges Seemoos
einsammelte. Auf dem Boot half ihm diese Stücke an eine Kordel zu binden, dazu
benötigte es einen speziellen Knopf. Es war nicht ganz einfach, aber ich lernte
ihn und konnte Power etwas von Hilfe sein. Wir pflanzen zwei Kordeln neues
Seemoos, das in 6-8 Wochen erntebereit sein wird. Zuhause wird es getrocknet
und danach in Plastik Säcken natürlich gebleicht. Das violette wie grüne und
gelbe Seemoos sieht am Schluss gleich aus: weiss!
On Wednesday Power took me to his sea moss farms (https://seamossbosscanouan.com). He has been running this business for five years and sells the dried sea moss all over the world. He receives a lot of support from his daughter Shavron, who lives in Miami. His son Roberto is his mainstay for the Bay View Apartments (https://www.bvecanouan.com), which he manages from Taiwan.
We drove 15 minutes north along the west coast when we reached the first plantations. After half an hour we arrived in Corbec Bay and I went snorkelling while Power collected some sea moss. On the boat, I helped him tie these pieces to a cord, which required a special knot. It wasn't easy, but I learned it and was able to help Power a little. We plant two cords of new sea moss, which will be ready for harvest in 6-8 weeks. At home, it will be dried and then naturally bleached in plastic bags. The purple, green and yellow sea moss will look the same in the end: white!

Mein Telefon spukte auch heute etwas und veränderte
Einstellungen ohne meine Machenschaften… je heller es ist, desto dunkler wird
das Display und ich konnte wenig Fotos schiessen, weil ich es einfach nicht
sah! Ich hoffe ich schaffe es bis Grenada oder sogar Trinidad um ein Neues zu
kaufen!?

My phone
was acting up a bit today too and changed settings without me doing anything...
the brighter it is, the darker the display gets and I couldn't take a lot of
photos because I just couldn't see it! I hope I can make it to Grenada or even
Trinidad to buy a new one!?
