Viel Zerstörung ist noch zu sehen auf der 2 x 5 km
kleinen Insel Union Island… ich fasse mir stets ans Herz, wenn ich den Trümmern
begegne… Union Island ist die letzte der Grenadinen und am weitesten entfernt
von der Mutterinsel St. Vincent… alles gelangt hier zuletzt an… Es bedeutet für
viele Menschen einen Neustart, denn die meisten haben alles verloren… 2/3 der 3000
Einwohner haben die Insel nach Beryl letzten Sommer verlassen… vielleicht kommt
die Hälfte wieder zurück… und Neueinwanderer… Zeit für Neukreationen! - Glücklicherweise
hatte ich ein gemütliches Zuhause bei Margaret im Backstreet BNB (https://www.booking.com/hotel/vc/backstreet-bnb.de.html), wo ich mich geborgen fühlte!
A lot of destruction can still be seen on the 2 x 5 km small island of Union Island... I always held my heart when I come across the rubble-houses... Union Island is the last of the Grenadines and the furthest away from its mother island of St. Vincent... everything arrives here last... It means a restart for many people, because most have lost everything... 2/3 of the 3000 inhabitants left the island after Beryl last summer... maybe half will come back... and new immigrants... time for new creations! - Fortunately, I had a cozy home at Margaret’s Backstreet BNB (https://www.booking.com/hotel/vc/backstreet-bnb.de.html), where I felt safe and sound!

Nachdem ich gestern der Nordküste von Union Island entlanggewandert
war, fehlte mir noch der Süden der 9 km2 kleinen Insel... Am
Dienstag machte ich mich auf von Clifton bis zum Queensberry Point alles
entlang der Küste zu wandern, meist auf einem Strand – herrlich mit all den
Blaufarben… Union Island mit seinen markanten Gipfeln erinnert mich etwas an
Tahiti (https://franziskaaeschbach17.blogspot.com)…
Eigentlich sagte ich gestern nach 3 Stunden Wandern: Heute mach ich nichts! Aber heute waren es wieder 3 Stunden Marschzeit… zurück nahm ich einen Bus, die hier genauso bunt sind wie in St. Vincent – einfach ohne Musik: Man spricht miteinander! ; ) Der Busfahrer war so nett, dass er mich unterwegs zu einem Supermarkt fuhr und draussen mit den andern Passagieren auf mich wartete! : ))
After hiking along the north coast of Union Island yesterday, I still wanted to see the south of the 9 km2 small island... On Tuesday I set out to hike the entire coast from Clifton to Queensberry Point, mostly on a beach - wonderful with all the colours of blue... Union Island with its striking peaks reminds me a bit of Tahiti (https://franziskaaeschbach17.blogspot.com)...
Actually, after 3 hours of hiking yesterday I said: I'm not doing anything today! But today it was another 3 hours of walking... I took a bus back, which are just as colourful here as in St. Vincent - but without music: People talk to each other! ; ) The bus driver was so nice that he drove me to a supermarket on the way and waited for me outside with the other passengers! : ))

Am Dienstag erledigte ich das letzte Stück im Südosten joggend… ich wollte zum Fort Aussichtspunkt, aber die umgeblasenen Bäume versperrten manchen Wanderweg. Das hatte ich vor allem gestern bemerkt, als ich im Gestrüpp des Ashton Lagoons nicht mehr weiterkam… Stattdessen joggte ich zum Kite Beach und über den winzigen Flughafen, dann die stark beschädigte Küste wieder zurück. Zum Schwimmen war es in der Petit Bay ideal, am andern Ende von Clifton…
On Tuesday I did the last part of the journey in the southeast by jogging... I wanted to go to the Fort lookout point, but the blown down trees blocked some of the hiking trails. I noticed this especially yesterday when I couldn't get any further in the undergrowth of Ashton Lagoon... Instead I jogged to Kite Beach and then across the tiny airport, then back along the heavily damaged coast. Petit Bay was ideal for swimming, at the other end of Clifton...

Vor Sonnenuntergang machte ich mich dann die 20 Minuten
rauf zum Fort – ein Einheimischer hat mir erklärt, welchen Weg ich nehmen muss.
Und es hat sich gelohnt: Eine fantastische Rundsicht auf das wunderschöne Union
Island lud mich ein zum Verweilen! : )

Before
sunset I made the 20-minute hike up to the fort - a local explained to me which
way to take. And it was worth it: A fantastic panoramic view of beautiful Union
Island invited me to linger a bit! : )
