Am Samstag morgen konnte ich nicht warten, bis es hell war… denn gestern war ich in der Dunkelheit angekommen. Wie gewohnt an einem neuen Ort, ging ich gleich mal eine Runde joggen – so weiss man, was es in der gibt! Es waren 2.5 km bis nach Oranjestad, der Hauptstadt und eigentlich der einzige Ort auf Statia, wo vor allem Chinesen ein paar Einkaufsmöglichkeiten bieten.

On Saturday morning I couldn't wait until it was daylight... because yesterday I had arrived in the dark. As usual in a new place, I went for a run straight away - that way I know what is where! It was 2.5 km to Oranjestad, the capital and actually the only town on Statia, where mainly Chinese people offer a few shopping opportunities.

Auch hier grüssen alle, wie auf Saba, winkend und/oder hupend im Auto. Die Leute sich offener als auf Saba liebenswert und es herrscht ein totales Vertrauen untereinander. Niemand schliesst hier etwas ab, so liess ich die Türe in meinem Bungalow angelweit offen. Alle der 3'500 Einwohner die ich getroffen habe, schätzen dieses Vertrauenkönnen und die Sicherheit sehr, das hat damit zu tun, dass nur wenige Touristen diese kleine Insel (21 km²) besuchen... So geniessen es hier auch die Manager Toni & Rosa der Statia Lodge (https://www.statialodge.com), die ursprünglich aus der Dominikanischen Republik stammen. Ich liebe die Abgeschiedenheit der Statia Lodge und Toni ist ein Superhost sondergleichen: Er holt seine Gäste ab und bringt sie auch wieder zum (Flug-)Hafen! Jederzeit war er bereit mir den 30-minütigen Marsch in die Stadt zu ersparen und brachte mich wohin ich wollte! Die Insel ist ja klein, nur gerade 3 x 7 km und die Hälfte nimmt der schlafende Vulkan Mazinga, auch The Quill genannt, in Anspruch!

Here too, like on Saba, everyone greets everybody by waving and/or honking in the car. The people are more open than on Saba, very lovely and there is total trust amongst them. Nobody locks anything here, so I left the door to my bungalow wide open too. All of the 3,500 residents I met really appreciate this trust and security, which has to do with the fact that only a few tourists visit this small island (21 km²)... The managers Toni & Rosa of the Statia Lodge (https://www.statialodge.com), who originally come from the Dominican Republic, also enjoy it here. I love the isolation of the Statia Lodge and Toni is a superhost like no other: He picks up his guests and brings them back to the (air)port! He was always ready to save me the 30-minute walk to town and took me wherever I wanted to go! The island is small, just 3 x 7 km and half of it is taken up by the dormant volcano Mazinga, also known as The Quill!

Ja, und diesen erklomm ich teilweise mit Seilen am Sonntag: Toni fuhr mich zum Beginn des The Quill Trails und ich erreichte den Rücken des Kraters auf 600 m in 2 Stunden – natürlich tropfend, deshalb wandere ich im Bikini! ; ) Da das Wetter freundlich aussah, entschloss ich rund um Mount Mazinga zu wandern… 1 ½ Stunden später begann es dann doch zu regnen, aber ich war schon fast im Botanischen Garten, wo ich einen langen Rast einlegte, bis es aufhörte zu regnen. Von dort wanderte ich nochmals eine Stunde, bis ich fast in Oranjestad war und mich freundlicherweise jemand auflud und mitnahm. : )

Yes, and I climbed it, parts of it with ropes, on Sunday: Toni drove me to the start of The Quill Trail and I reached the ridge of the crater at 600 m in 2 hours - dripping with sweat of course, that's why I hike in my bikini! ; ) Since the weather looked nice, I decided to hike around Mount Mazinga... 1 ½ hours later it started to rain, but I was almost in the botanical garden, where I took a long break until it stopped raining. From there I walked for another hour until I was almost in Oranjestad and someone kindly picked me up and gave me a lift. : )
