ich schon 1 Monat in den Kleinen Antillen unterwegs! : ) Von St. Martin/Sint
Maarten mit der Fähre nach St. Barts, Anguilla und Saba... von Saba ging es
ebenfalls per Schiff nach Statia und weiter nach St. Kitts & Navis. Die Vulkaninsel
St. Kitts ist etwas grösser als die andern: 170 km2 (Navis 90) mit
40'000 Einwohner und einer richtigen Stadt. Den erloschenen Vulkan Liamuiga mit
1156 m, was die fruchtbare Insel heisst in der Sprache der Kalinago, benötigt 8
Stunden um ihn zu bezwingen... das ist mir definitiv zu viel und ich
konzentrier mich lieber auf anderes...
I've been travelling in the Lesser Antilles for a month now! : ) From St. Martin/Sint Maarten by ferry to St. Barts, Anguilla and Saba... from Saba I also took the boat to Statia and then on to St. Kitts & Navis. The volcanic island of St. Kitts is a bit bigger than the others: 170 km2 (Navis 90) with 40,000 inhabitants and a real town. The extinct volcano Liamuiga at 1156 m, which means the fertile island in the Kalinago language, takes 8 hours to conquer... that's definitely too much for me and I prefer to concentrate on other things...

Zuerst,
wie immer, ging ich joggend auf eine Entdeckungstour um Frigate Bay herum – so wusste
ich gleich am ersten Tag, dass Frigate Bay ist eine sehr angenehme Gegend ist mit
mehreren aber einem ruhigen Strand, wo man immer schwimmen kann. Es hat viele
Restaurants aus allen Teilen der Welt und einige Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, was man
locker alles zu Fuss schafft. Zudem bietet meine Wohnung im Timothy Beach Resort (https://www.timothybeach.com) eine herrliche Aussicht… mein
Balkon ist den ganzen Tag im Schatten, so dass ich draussen bei einem Lüftchen
arbeiten kann! : )
Ja, ich musste vieles recherchieren und organisieren für meine
Weiterreise nach und von Antigua… Reisen heisst nicht Ferien! Zum Glück
funktioniert hier das Internet ziemlich gut – ich habe bei Digicel (https://www.digicelgroup.com/mq/en/mobile) in St.
Martin ein Abo gelöst, wo alle Inseln der kleinen Antillen und sogar Frankreich
unlimitiert enthalten sind. Auf Anguilla, Saba und St. Eustatius war der
Empfang schwach, aber mit den guten WiFi’s in meinen Unterkünften konnte ich alles
erledigen.
First, as always, I went for a run to explore Frigate Bay - so I knew right on the first day that Frigate Bay is a very pleasant area with several beaches but one calm one, where it is always safe to swim. There are many restaurants from all over the world and some shopping opportunities, all of which I can easily do on foot. In addition my apartment at the Timothy Beach Resort (https://www.timothybeach.com) has a wonderful view... my balcony is in the shade all day, so I can work outside in a breeze! : )
Yes, I had to do a lot of research and organization for my onward journey to and from Antigua... traveling doesn't mean vacation! Luckily, the internet works pretty well here - I have a subscription with Digicel (https://www.digicelgroup.com/mq/en/mobile) in St. Martin, which includes all the islands of the Lesser Antilles and even France with unlimited access. On Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius, the reception was weak, but with the good WiFi in my accommodations I was able to do everything.

Am
Mittwoch spazierte ich los zum Kreisel, streckte meinen Daumen raus und Ashley
& Math nahmen mich mit zum Flughafen. Ganz in der Nähe befindet sich der Bahnhof
des Panoramazuges, der ursprünglich für den Zuckerrohrabbau gebaut und benutzt wurde.
Leider wartete ich vergebens… zuerst hiess es der Zug sei verspätet, dann wurde
die Fahrt abgesagt! – Dann also auf nach Basseterre, der Hauptstadt von St.
Kitts & Navis! Auf der Hauptstrasse hat es viele Busstationen, wo die
kleinen Transporter mit H im Nummernschild auf Wunsch anhalten… reisen mit den
Einheimischen zum 10-tel des Taxipreises! ; ) Ah, und übrigens: Hier sind die
Preise wieder normal! Die Hälfte als in Antigua und holländisch Sint Maarten
und 1/3 weniger als auf Saba und Statia… etwa gleich wie im französischen St.
Martin…

On Wednesday I walked to the roundabout, stuck out my thumb and Ashley
& Math took me to the airport. Very close by is the station of the Scenic
Train, which was originally built and used for sugar cane transportation.
Unfortunately I waited in vain... first they said the train was delayed, then
the trip was cancelled! – Then off to Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts
& Navis! There are many bus stations on the main road where the small vans
with H in the license plate stop on request... travelling with the locals for
10th of the taxi price! ; ) Oh, and by the way: The prices are back to normal
here! Half as in Antigua and Dutch Sint Maarten and 1/3 less than on Saba and
Statia... about the same as in French St. Martin...
