Was ich
auf Saba vorhatte, war wandern und schnorcheln... aber das Meer war zu wild und/oder
es regnete... Vielleicht habe ich gar nichts verpasst, denn mein Nachbar Twan,
der in St. Martin, Saba und St. Eustatius ein Marineprojekt leitet, hat mir
erzählt, dass die Unterwasserwelt hier alles andere als gesund ist! Seit
einigen Jahren vernichtet ein Virus alles, was er kriegt... Das habe ich
bereits in Anguilla bemerkt: Es hat zwar einige farbige Fische, aber keine
Korallen - ausser einige wenige grossblättrige, ganz weiss also befallen
waren... : (
What I had planned on Saba was hiking and snorkelling... but the sea was too wild and/or it was raining... Maybe I didn't miss anything, because my neighbour Twan, who manages a marine project in St. Martin, Saba and St. Eustatius, told me that the underwater world here is anything but healthy! For several years now, a virus has been destroying everything it is getting... I noticed this already in Anguilla: There are some colourful fish, but no corals - except for a few large-leaved ones, which were completely white thus infected... : (

Dafür
begleitet mich Cyril auf dem Sandy Cruz Trail fast rund um den Mount Scenery
(877 m). Wie bereits beschrieben, auf Saba gibt es zahtlreiche gut erhaltene
und ausgeschilderte Wanderwege (Saba Tourism https://www.sabatourism.com/hiking).
Wir parkierten in The Bottom und nach 1 ½ Stunden wandern im Jungel erreichten
wir Hell's Gate, wo uns gleich das erste Auto mit nach Windwards nahm... dort
fuhren wir per Autostopp (mit dem 2. Auto) mit nach The Bottom. Natürlich kennt
Cyril alle hier, so ist es noch viel einfacher per Anhalter weiterzukommen! : )
Instead, Cyril accompanies me on the Sandy Cruz Trail almost around Mount Scenery (877 m). As already described, there are numerous well-maintained and signposted hiking trails on Saba (Saba Tourism https://www.sabatourism.com/hiking). We parked in The Bottom and after 1 ½ hours of hiking in the jungle we reached Hell's Gate, where the first car took us back to Windwards... there we hitchhiked (the 2nd car stopped) to The Bottom. Of course, Cyril knows everyone here, so it's even easier to get around by hitchhiking! : )

Am
Mittwoch ist der spannendste Tag der Woche auf Saba, denn das Schiff mit neuer
Ware kommt! Und tatsächlich, man stand richtig an in den wenigen Supermärkten
auf der Insel. Es gibt ein Recyclingsystem: Trockenes/Recyclebares (wie Glas,
Plastik, Metall, Papier und Karton, aber nicht getrennt) oder übrigen Abfall -
wie in Irland (https://franziskaaeschbach29.blogspot.com)!
Das Regenwasser wird aufgefangen und gefiltertes, so kann man es sogar trinken.
Und der Strom für die ganze Insel von 6 - 18 Uhr wird mit Solarzellen
gewonnen...

Wednesday is the most exciting day of the week on Saba, because the ship
with new goods arrives! And indeed, there were long queues in the few
supermarkets on the island. They also have a recycling system: dry/recyclable
items (such as glass, plastic, metal, paper and cardboard, but not separated)
or other waste - like in Ireland (https://franziskaaeschbach29.blogspot.com)! The
rainwater is collected and filtered, so you can even drink it. And the
electricity for the whole island from 6 am to 6 pmis generated by solar
cells...
